Mega Tinkering Day 2025
Mega Tinkering Day – 12th August 2025: Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog promotes a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across India. A key initiative under AIM, Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs), are state-of-the-art makerspaces in schools that foster curiosity and innovation among students from grades 6 to 12 through hands-on exposure to cutting-edge tools like 3D printers, IoT kits, robotics, and miniaturized electronics. Till now 10,000 ATLs have been set up across 35 states and union territories, spanning 722 districts, with more than 1.1 crore students actively participating and contributing to over 16 lakh innovation projects. Government or government-aided schools and girls/co-ed schools account for over 60% and 96% of ATL adoption, respectively, ensuring inclusive reach.
To celebrate and further drive the remarkable progress India has made in nurturing a spirit of innovation and creativity among school students, the Atal Innovation Mission is celebrating Mega Tinkering Day on August 12, 2025. This nationwide initiative aims to highlight the growing impact of Atal Tinkering Labs in empowering young minds through hands-on learning and technological exploration. Mega Tinkering Day aims to bring together all 10,000 Atal Tinkering Lab schools and associated stakeholders – all students, ATL in-charges, State Nodal Officers, mentors, principals and partners, reinforcing the vision of making “Tinkering” and innovation a nationwide movement. It is a one-day nationwide event where all 10,000 ATLs come together to build a Do-It-Yourself project simultaneously for 1 hour.
Objectives
The objectives of the Mega Tinkering Day are –
- Promote Innovation Spirit among students
- Build a simple Tinkering Project together in a group
- Be a part of India’s Largest Tinkering Event
Activity
Schools from across the country, along with their students, ATL in-charges, principals, mentors, AIM team, and partners, will participate in the event virtually from their respective ATLs. In this event, participating students all across India will build an innovative project together in one of the largest ever global tinkering events done collectively in a single day. During this event, all ATLs across India will build a small tinkering project together for 1 hour.
The materials needed to build the project would already be present in the ATL lab of the school. As part of the event, students will be explained the scientific concept behind the project and will be shown the steps online for building the project using equipment from the ATL. This project building activity will be aimed at developing the attitude and aptitude to experiment and tinker amongst young students, and also give a kickstart to the tinkering activities for the upcoming academic year. These schools will then be invited to participate in a contest where they will share pictures and videos of the tinkering activity done in their schools.
Impact
The event will showcase the power of collaborative, hands-on learning at scale. It is a celebration of the innovation ecosystem across India. The goal is to drive the saturation of tinkering in India at the school level—embedding curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving in every district.
