Assessment Booklet: Tools, Marks Weightage & Grading Structure
NEP 2020 stated that assessment should measure the achievement of competencies and learning outcomes leading to attainment of curricular goals. Assessment should be constructive developmental learning focused, age appropriate. One size fit for all approach is not suitable to assess 360o assessment. Hence the process of assessment Shall shift from mear paper pencil test to project works, group assignments, Oral assessments by utilising different tools for assessment. Types of Assessments:
Students’ performance Shall assessed by two different ways.
- Formative Assessment
- Summative Assessment
Frequency:
- Formative assessment Shall conduct four times in a year i.e. August, October, January and February.
- Summative Assessment Shall conduct two times in a year i.e. November and April.
Note: Fourth formative for class X will be treated as Prefinal test.
Formative Assessment: Structure and Pattern
Formative Assessment is a competency-based test to assess students’ performance in multiple dimensions. Different assessment tools will be utilised to assess students’ performance inside and outside class room activities. It includes Classroom observations, Weekend tests, Bimonthly tests, observing student performance in various learning environments, including – Library, Laboratory, Playground, Social activities, Cultural activities, Participation in student clubs, etc.,
Assessment Tools and Marks Weightage:
For class I and II:
- Formative assessments are conducted with age-appropriate tools to assess performance of the class I and II children.
- This includes activity based and paper pencil tests.
- Teacher will assess and record the responses of the individual students.
Assessment Tools:

- For the first three tools’ rubrics along with assessment material will be provided to the teachers in the form of teachers’ kit. Tool -IV will be conducted as a paper pencil test consisting of Telugu, English and Mathematics. The structure of this test is as follows.
Formative Assessment Written Test for classes I and II is a paper pencil test for 20 marks. The question paper is divided into 2 sections – A and B. This includes two types of questions namely Multiple-Choice Questions and Short Answer Questions.

For class III to IX:
- Formative assessments are conducted with four different tools to assess performance of the children.
Assessment Tools:
- Children’s participation and reflection: 5 marks
- Written work: 5 marks
- Project work: 5 marks
- Written test: 35 marks
Marks allotment:
Tool 1: Children’s participation and reflections: This is subject specific formative assessment tool. This includes

Tool 2: Written Work: This includes on time completion of exercises given in textbooks and workbooks, Notes writing, Children dairy and other writing activities at school and home level.
3 marks will be allotted for on time completion of written works, 2 marks allotted for neat and legible handwriting. (Teachers are advised to conduct calligraphy activities for good hand writing.)
Tool 3: Project Work: Project works will be creative not cut and paste activities. Do not ask students to go for internet.

Tool 4: Written Test
Formative Assessment Written Test for classes III to V is a paper pencil test for 35 marks. The question paper is divided into 3 sections – A, B, and C. This includes three types of questions namely Multiple-Choice Questions, Short Answer Questions and Long Answer Questions.

Formative Assessment Written Test for classes VI to IX is a paper pencil test for 35 marks. The question paper is divided into 4 sections – A, B, C and D. This includes four types of questions namely Multiple-Choice Questions, Short Answer Questions, Long Answer Questions and Essay type Questions.

Note: For classes VIII, IX, and X, the Science Formative Assessment (FA) will consist of two papers: Physical Science (PS) and Biological Science (BS). Each paper will follow the same format as outlined above. The assessments should be conducted separately in different sessions. Other assessment tools should also be evaluated separately, and records should be maintained accordingly. However, the final results should be consolidated as a single subject when entering them.
Summative Assessment: Structure and Pattern
Summative Assessment is assessment of learning. This will conduct at the end of term/ academic year. The test items in the summative assessment Shall free response/ open ended in nature. The written tests demonstrate the children’s talent in writing. Of all the evaluation tools used to evaluate the performance of children, written test is the most important one. This is a tool to know how far the children are able to express their thoughts and feelings – how the thoughts are expressed; how they are sequenced; the richness in vocabulary; the handwriting, etc. Therefore, the questions should be such that their answers require the children to think on their own; they should not be readily available in guides and question banks.
Structure and Pattern of Summative Assessment:
Summative Assessment for classes I and II is a paper pencil test that will be conducted for 40 marks and scaled up to 80 marks. The question paper is divided into 3 sections – A, B and C. This includes three types of questions namely Multiple-Choice Questions, Very Short Answer Questions and Long Answer Questions.

Summative Assessment for classes III to IX is a paper pencil test for 80 marks. The question paper is divided into 4 sections – A, B, C and D. This includes four types of questions namely Multiple-Choice Questions, Short Answer Questions, Long Answer Questions and Essay type Questions.

Note: For classes VIII, IX, and X, the Science SA will consist of two papers: PS and BS. Each paper includes 10 MCǪs, 3 short answer questions, 2 long answer questions, and 2 very long answer questions.
Nature of questions for written test:
The questions given in written test for summative and formative assessments Shall be
- On subject specific learning outcomes.
- Follow subject specific blue prints and weightage tables.
- Away from rote learning and memory based.
- Not directly taken from the textbooks.
- Based on competencies, encompassing multiple learning outcomes.
- Open ended, free response.
- Critical thinking and creative thinking.
- Application oriented.
- On factual but not mere informative.
- Scope for express personal views and opinions.
- Simple and easily understandable stem.
Internal Marks Weightage:
Children’s performance will be assessed inside and outside classroom activities. All the examinations, assessments and observations shall take into consideration while assessing students learning standards. Hence, internal weightage will be given for final assessment.
• Final Examination (SA-II): 80%
• Internal Assessment (Total marks of Four Formative Assessments and SA-I):
Annual Result calculation:

Assessment of Cocurricular Areas:
- There are four cocurricular subjects namely (Values C Life skills, Arts C Cultural Education, Work C Computer Education & Health C Physical Education)
- Each cocurricular area will be assessed in summative assessments through observation for 50 marks.
- There is no written test.
- Grades will be given similar to regular subjects.
